    Two of my great-grandfathers had to go to work in a coal mine when they were boys because their fathers had died suddenly. They were only boys, but they both had to support their mothers and siblings. What's really crazy is that they both worked in the same coal mine--the Victoria mine in Preston County. They might have known each other, but I doubt they were buddy-buddy--they were eight years apart in age. The tombstones at 6:00 & 8:00 are both inscribed in Hungarian.

    It's eerie how similar Isaiah Prickett's story is to that of my own 5th great-grandfather. Just twenty years after Isaiah died, my ancestor died in the very same way in Washington County, Ohio. He was in the woods looking for a lost cow when an Indian surprised him, murdered him, and scalped him. The details of the story are known because the Indian who did this was dumb enough to brag about it in front of a group of white men in Marietta, Ohio. Two of my ancestor's sons were in that crowd. They said nothing to identify themselves to the Indian as his victim's sons. A short time later, the Indian mysteriously disappeared. Unlike the Indian, the white men in this story were smart enough to keep their mouths closed, so nobody knows exactly what happened to the Indian--but it's easy to guess the general outline of the story. Similar to Isaiah, my ancestor's grave is marked with a very large modern tombstone. His original tombstone is now in the Washington County museum.

    My parents are buried in this cemetery. I have a question about the tombstones. My mother died first, and her tombstone had a cross on it above her name. When my father died, I told the funeral director I wanted the same sort of cross on the tombstone above my father's name. He told me they only put a religious symbol on one side of the tombstone--that is, unless the husband and wife were of different faiths. After my father died, we went and visited the grave, only to find that the cross is now on the side of the tombstone where my father's name is. Therefore, there must have been a different tombstone there originally. Why would they waste a tombstone that was only going to be temporary? And what happened to my mother's original tombstone?

    If you stand on either Goodwin Street or Ford Street and look toward this cemetery, you can still see where both streets used to go through where this cemetery is now. On the far side of Oak Grove Cemetery is another cemetery called Lawnwood Cemetery. I bet a lot of people don't know that there are actually two cemeteries there. Sometimes there's a chain-link fence between them--at other times, it disappears. I'm not sure if Oak Grove is the oldest cemetery in Morgantown or the oldest _surviving_ cemetery. There used to be another very old cemetery at the corner of Spruce Street and Forest Avenue--which is now the current location of First Presbyterian Church. That church building was constructed in the 1950's (although the congregation is far older). They just dug up the cemetery and destroyed it. The church used to have a parking lot up the hill from the church building itself (which has now been converted into a playground). There are steps leading up from the front door of the church to the playground. As you go up the steps to the playground, there's a retaining wall on the right. The old tombstones have been incorporated into that wall. I find it disheartening that anyone, but especially a church, would have so little respect for the dead. I've heard that in America, it's hard to find many cemeteries that are more than 150 years old. Once they get that old, people stop caring for them, and they just disappear. A similar irony is when Wal-Mart wanted to build a new location on 705. They were prevented from doing so because there was supposedly an Indian burial ground there. Later on, they built the Suncrest Towne Centre there, so I guess those Indian graves weren't too sacred to be desecrated by having other businesses built on top of them.

    • @NorthCentral
      @NorthCentral Месяц назад

      @@bigscarysteve from my understanding, there were many cemeteries around Morgantown in the 1800’s. In the late 1800,s the city went through an expansion period, and exhumed the bodies and moved them to Oak Grove. The land was sold and built upon by different businesses. And you are right about Lawnwood, not many know of its existence. I looked at a map of 1850 Morgantown with its many cemeteries. lol very different landscape today. Thanks for watching!

  • @bigscarysteve
    @bigscarysteve Месяц назад

    This is at least the third location for this cemetery. The county has moved it at least twice. I've never been to the current location, but I have visited this cemetery once. Back in 1982, the _Dominion Post_ ran a couple stories about how rowdy people were having all-night parties in this cemetery, littering it with their beer cans and breaking the wooden crosses that marked the graves. Around that time, I went to a youth group meeting at my church. After the formal meeting was over, everybody jumped in cars, saying there was a place where they hung out after the meeting. Turns out, this cemetery was that place. I asked the other teenagers what on earth they were thinking. If they had run into the partiers, it wouldn't have gone well for them. My great-grandmother is buried in this cemetery. When she died, my great-grandfather was so poor, he couldn't afford to bury her, so she ended up here. My great-uncle always wanted to buy a headstone to put on her grave, but he never did. He's long dead now, too. I wonder if anybody even knows the exact spot where she's buried.

So because of one stone being raised too high for them, you will only be cleaning upright stones? Im sorry. I wish they would see the difference your work is compared to others who are not as neat and organized like you. Recently, I saw one woman only cleaning the front of the stone because the back didnt look dirty and didnt want to waste product ( was her excuse, what about the dirt in the stone she cant see). Another thing i notice is ppl not cleaning the full stone, just the wording or top of the stone. Leaving the bases filthy. SMH, you did NO harm! I think I will finally have no rain and good temps tomorrow. I plan to do some walk throughs too, with D2...just in case. Bridgeport is missing out!

      Thank you for that, it is greatly appreciated. And it’s ok, there are plenty of stones in cemeteries around me.

    What about the ones beside you. They are inches above ground. Guess the mowers don't like to weed eat.

      Yea, this is kind of what happens when you do things in a larger cemetery. Especially one that is taken care of by a municipality. They have there manager, that have there opinion, and that’s that. They make the rules. I have taken a good couple of steps back here. I will now only be maintaining the Upright stones here. Glad to do that.

      @@NorthCentral Yeah, what can ya do? That sucks...that particular one was one of the most overgrown, about to get gobbled up ones, I think I have seen you recover.
